Here at Nothing Interesting we are curious about the “white van syndrome” and aim to explain why after being told about the popularity of white vans many people with nothing interesting to do but study van colour report a dramatic increase in white van sightings.
Until now the only white syndrome we have been aware of is white coat hypertension - where an association is made between having your blood pressure measured in a clinical or medical environment (ie white lab coats) has the effect of raising blood pressure highr than its normal level. Many people are affected by white coat hypertension who needlessly think that they have high blood pressure when in fact their blood pressure is noticably lower when measured whilst relaxed at home.
One theory about white van syndrome is that many of the vans on the roads are hired and almost all hire vans are white. We phoned around a selection of van hire companies and tried to rent a non-white van. The response was illuminating:
Never had that requested before
What’s the matter - white no good for you
You a racist mate?
We can always not wash the van if that helps
Trying to keep a straight face I pressed the receptionists further and asked if thye could actually supply a dirty van complete with witty finger written messages - “I wish my missus was this dirty” Vantastic!
