Nice Work - If You Can Get It

Checking over at Pasty Muncher’s blog post Crap Jobs in which he spilled the beans about the experience of trying to earn a bit on the side whilst working for a Mystery Shopping company set me to thinking about the work I do and how it could be improved.

Many online recruitment and job sites runs various features under the general heading of Jobseeker Tips - offering career advice, interview tips etc and some of the points made on this article about corporate culture reminds us that all companies have a culture - either by design or that it simply evolved. It continues to warn that when you join an organisation, you are “effectively joining a cult”

But what about when the company you work for is taken over merged and you are swallowed integrated into a new corporate culture?

It’s too late to pose the questions suggested to see if you are a good match - does what drive you drive the people in the organisation you work for?Badger Time!

  • What are your ambitions?
  • Where do your ambitions come from?
  • What really motivates you?
  • What are your career values?
  • Where exactly do you want to be in one/five years?
  • What core career beliefs do you operate by?

A professional recruiter claims that over ninety percent of people can’t say what really drives them. Responses to questions about short and long term goals are often influenced by friends, family or peers.

Sad but true the most cited reason people offer for doing the jobs they do is our dear friend - luvley jubbly - filthy dirty cash. For all the pompous guff human resources and career advice practitioners spout most of us look for the vacancies that offer more cash better perks - the corporate culture is overlooked
