New Hoover,

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Well, when i say Hoover, I mean vacuum cleaner, coz I went and bought a Dyson :D

to be more specific, this Dyson DC14, and its awesome.

After having our last Hoover for a couple of years it had pretty much stopped sucking, and was a nightmare to use, so me and my girlfriend went into Comet at the weekend to buy a new one. We had a look around and tried out a load of different vacuums including the new Dyson ball thingy, but it was too weird to use lol. So we just got the normal Dyson instead.

I very pleased about the vacuum, its really powerful and picks up everything :D

My Road Angel

Monday, February 19th, 2007

As i mentioned in one of my earlier posts I had a Road Angel bought for me for xmas by my girlfriend after me bugging her for it for ages. After using it for only a couple months i plugged it into my car on Thursday night and nothing happened. I was gutted, I hadn’t really used it that much and it was already broken :(.

So me and my girlfriend went off to Halfords (where she bought it before xmas) to see if we could replace it with a new one, and to my surprise they were more then happy to swap my broken road angel over with a brand new one :) , but, they didn’t have any in stock. In fact they didn’t even have any on display. Luckily I know someone that works there, and they rang up the city centre shop, who said they had one and they would put it back for us :).

So after a 15min drive into town we got to the Halfords in town and explained what was going on, and one of the guys disappears up stairs to get a replacement. After a few mins he comes back down with a Road Angel plus box (the £300 top of the range model, apposed to my £200 standard Angel), and starts opening it up saying he needed to check everything was in there. At this point my girlfriend nudges me and whispers “don’t say anything, i don’t think he knows its a plus”. Keeping quiet i watch him unpack my faulty normal Road Angel, and transfer everything from the plus box to my box, and then passes it back to me. I think he knew they didn’t have any of mine left, and instead of telling me and letting me shout at him for a while he just gave me a free upgrade :D.

Now i have to phone up Road Angel and cancel my old subscription and start the new one :D.

Vista

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Well, its been a long time coming, but Microsoft have finally released their new OS, and, i don’t like it.

For those of you that haven’t seen it yet (where have you been lol), heres a link to the PC World site explaining what benefits Vista has etc etc Windows Vista
Tbh i haven’t yet got the chance to play around with the new system, but looking at the screen shots, and several videos of it working and it all looks very pretty, but tbh, thats not what i want. Call me old fashioned but i don’t need to be able to skip through the windows i have open in 3D, i can see what i have open in the XP start menu bar.

I use a computer everyday at work, so i am used to using the old window XP/2000 which i have come to (dare i say it) like, so any change that Microsoft did that changes the way that people use the OS would be harshly received by me, but i have also heard that they have taken away several useful little features that i have come to depend on everyday at work, like for instance the ‘up a folder’ button in the explorer window. If this is true I can imagine navigating through your folder structure being a pain in the ass (excuse my French). For what has been taken out and added i guess i will have to wait until i use the system for the first time.

Now, time for me to stop say how much i’m not looking forward to having to use Vista in the future, and to tell you about it a little.

Vista will come in 4 main types, Home, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate. Vista Home will be the basic package, where you wont even get the new 3D window shuffling (called Windows Aero graphics) or the new and improved Media centre. But you will get heightened security compared to XP (but thats about it). Home Premium does indeed include all the new 3D window viewing and the new Media centre, plus if you have a Xbox 360 you can wirelessly connect for “the ultimate entertainment network” (so they say). Vista Business is said to be the first Microsoft OS to be targeted specificlly to meet businesses needs. And Window Vista Ultimate basically does what it says on the tin, it has all of the above.

I’m sure that Vista has lots of funky new features and tools, but from what i have read most of the burb about it focuses on how it is the more secure system that Microsoft have ever made, and is the safest operating system available.  This is yet to be seen .

The MYT Engine

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Hello everyone,

I was looking through one of the many car forums that I am a member of, and I saw this link Linky linky

The above link is a youtube video showing a new design in engine called the MYT (Massive Yet Tiny) Engine. Now this is no ordinary new engine, this is a whole new design of how the internal combustion engine works. Not only that, the creators of this new design say that it can give massive power and torque figures from units only a fraction the size of current engines.

Because of the way that the MYT engine is designed, like the rotary Wankel engine it has very few moving parts, and there for less energy is lost.

Here is the wiki page for the engine, this may clear up a few questions you might have (I am terrible at explaining things lol).

This could very well be the future of the internal combustion engine, but i think that it will depend on how the idea is received by the automotive industry. They could take the idea and develop it and test it even more, or they could try and bury the idea and try and bury it and forget about it.

Whatever happens i wouldn’t get too excited yet, I believe there is still lots and lots of testing to be done on the engine to see how long they will last, to see the effects of high pressure stress on the different components etc.
